About Tata Institute of Social Sciences

 

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) was established in 1936 as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work. In 1944, it was renamed as the Tata Institute of Social Sciences. The year 1964 was an important landmark in the history of the Institute, when it was declared Deemed to be a University under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act (UGC), 1956.

Since its inception, the Vision of the TISS has been to be an institution of excellence in higher education that continually responds to changing social realities through the development and application of knowledge, towards creating a people-centred, ecologically sustainable and just society that promotes and protects dignity, equality, social justice and human rights for all.

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) conducts BAT (Bachelor’s Admission Test). The entrance exam is a national level entrance exam and is conducted in offline mode i.e., pen and paper test.

TISS BAT 2021 Eligibility Criteria

 

  • All candidates who have cleared Class XII in any stream from a recognised board fulfil TISS BAT 2021 eligibility criteria.
  • Candidates who are awaiting results of their Class XII exams are also eligible to apply.
  • Besides, candidates who have studied International Baccalaureate Diploma and are expecting the declaration of their Class 12th results by June 2021 are eligible to apply for the exam as well.
  • Age limit: All candidates should be less than 23 years in age at the time of appearing for TISS BAT exam, as on August 2, 2021. Candidates over this age are not eligible to apply for the exam, informs the official website.

Exam Pattern

 

TISS BAT is divided in two parts, paper A and paper B. Total time allotted for both the papers is 60 + 30 = 90 minutes. Total marks of both the papers are 60 + 40 = 100. There are separate cut offs for both the papers and candidates needs to appear and clear both of them.

Let us take a look at the details of both the papers:

 

Paper A:

  • This paper will contain questions from General Knowledge, English Proficiency, Logical Reasoning, Data Interpretation and Mathematics.
  • Candidate will be given 60 minutes to complete the test.
  • This paper is of 60 marks.
  • All the questions in Paper 1 are Multiple Choice Type. 

 

Paper B:

  • In this test, candidates are given 4 topics, out of which candidates have to write essay on any two topics.
  • Length of the essay should be 500 words.
  • Candidates will be given a time of 30 minutes to complete this test.
  • This test carries a weightage of 40 marks in the total score, where each essay is of 20 marks.
  • Topics of essays are generally social concerns, opinions and abstract thoughts on social issues.

 

Marking Scheme

 

  • The candidates will be awarded 1 mark for each correct answer.
  • No negative marking.
